Have You Had "The Talk"?

If you haven’t experienced the role of caregiving - providing unpaid assistance for the physical and emotional needs of another person - it is difficult to grasp. The caregiving demands placed on adult children by elderly parents are expected to increase with the U.S. Census Bureau projecting that the segment of the population over age 65 will grow to 82 million by 2050.

The following article stresses the importance of families having conversations that include difficult topics like managing finances, defining family roles, and estate planning. It fails to mention one of the most complex issues for caregivers which is their parents’ decision to age in their own home. Many of these homes, sometimes referred to as “Peter Pan houses”, were built for someone who is never going to grow old and therefore present significant challenges as we age. The basic modifications needed to age in place, e.g. replacing a bathtub with an accessible shower, are often not considered until a major health event occurs, a time when managing home renovations can be especially daunting.

Another challenge for caregivers is that the services needed at different times and for different levels of care are not organized into an easily managed system. Families are faced with researching information, weighing complex issues, and making decisions about care needs and providers in reaction to the latest crisis. As a result, services often prove to be costly and ineffective. Long-distance caregiving is even more onerous.

This lack of planning has broad implications for individuals or families trying to assist a relative to remain in their home and highlights the importance of taking preventative measures before the changes are actually needed.

Bathrooms with Curb-less appeal

One of the growing trends in bathroom construction is curbless showers – continuous flooring that runs through the shower without a dividing curb or threshold. In addition to making small spaces look larger and creating a sleek and stylish look,  a primary benefit of going curbless is safety.  Every year about 235,000 people over the age 15 visit emergency rooms because of injuries suffered in the bathroom.  That’s an average of 640 people per day who are injured in their bathrooms all across the United States. Surprisingly, it is younger people who are more likely to be hurt in or around the tub.  One way to reduce the number of trips and falls in the shower is to eliminate the 3 to 4 inch threshold that is present in most showers today.

If you decide to go curbless, look for professionals who are familiar with these types of showers including splash zones, drains, and the need for a structural drop in the floor framing to accommodate the shower slope.  Expect to pay more as showers with curbs are usually easier — and cheaper — to install than curbless installations.

When well-executed a continuous floor design results in a spacious, integrated feel with increased safety and accessibility for all ages.
